Al Swainger\u2019s latest Pointless Beauty offering is such a mix of styles, textures & grooves that it\u2019s hard to pigeonhole. Not that that should matter of course. The use of electric instruments gives it a fusion\/prog rock feel in places but essentially it\u2019s for people who listen to music with an open mind. There are great compositions, beautiful melodies, some lovely playing & a joyous feel throughout. Al has created an alluring soundscape that transcends its influences.<\/em><\/p>\n

A musically ambitious, adventurous and imaginative album that is jazz based but brings in elements of electronic, ambient, fusion, experimental and other musics. It features some particularly notable trumpet and flugelhorn playing by Gary Alesbrook and guitar playing by Ant Law. I particularly enjoyed the cinematic ambient tracks Pause to Breathe and Hour of the Wolf, but the more jazz fusion tracks are played with style and panache. The leader Al Swainger oversees the album with a tight focus that is as impressive as his bass playing, composing and production. An excellent set.<\/em><\/p>\n
